Old School Fire Alarms
США
Добавлен 23 сен 2013
Old School Fire Alarms is dedicated to the history, collection, and preservation of older fire alarm systems and the components thereof. Specifically, manual pull rod systems manufactured during the late 1800's up through the 1970's where manual trip bells were used. Before electric, automated fire alarm systems were invented, pull rod fire alarms were commonly used in schools and other public buildings where an audible sound was needed to signal for a fire or conduct a fire drill. As time marched on, fire code regulations required pull rod systems to be automated with electric fire alarm hardware, where control panels and other electrical components took over once the pull rod was activated. In the event of an electrical outage, the pull rod fire alarm could still be utilized by simply pulling the rod multiple times to ring the manual trip bells. The Vandalized Fire Alarm @ Bettes Elementary School
Bettes Elementary School was constructed in 1927 and equipped with a manual pull rod fire alarm system. In 1952 additional classrooms were added to the building. It was at this time the fire alarm system was upgraded with electrical IBM hardware that automated the entire system. In 2018 - 2019 the school was closed due to redistricting and sold at public auction. The new owners intended to repurpose the old school building and use it for a community center. Due to lack of funding the project never came to fruition. Sadly, the building was breached by metal scrapers and vandals and fell into a total state of disrepair. As of February 2023, this school has been demolished.

Back in 2008, Pfeiffer Elementary School's fire alarm system was one of the very first I filmed for my You Tube channel and website, Old School Fire Alarms. Construction of Pfeiffer began in 1917 and was completed and dedicated in 1919. The school was named after two brothers, Jacob and William Pfeiffer, who donated the land the school is built on. The school was originally known as, "Overlook"...

Unfortunately, many old schools like the one shown in this video are being demolished at an alarming rate (pardon the pun). With their destruction many historical artifacts are also destroyed, like old fire alarm systems. These old schools are often times replaced with cheaply constructed new ones, that only have a mere lifespan of 30 years.

George Barber Elementary School Fire Alarm
Funny story. Our family went to a VERY old hotel with this type of alarm in each room. It went off and I almost had a heart attack and ended up peeing my pants. Because of the anxiety i had during that time, boy it sucked. It happened the same year when this video came out, (2014) and i was only 5.
I got a Benjamin SNP (original version of the 4030) today, thought you would like to hear about that.
That's great!! Keep collecting and preserve a little part of fire safety history.
@@OldSchoolFireAlarms absolutely!
Beautiful Fire Alarm 🚨
why did they stop using bells and move to the screechy ones
Because those types of signals are cheaper to purchase.
did you get to keep it?
Yes, I have the complete fire alarm system.
@@OldSchoolFireAlarms nice
The music in this video really set the tone of sadness and hopleness to the point where i genuinely feel pity for that old building. Nicely done.
Thank you for watching and for your comment.
thats Chattanooga School for the Arts & Sciences
@figm3nt0 leaked the name of the school in the abandoned fire alarm
Bro it’s in Ohio💀
The Ohio meme is dead it doesn't matter anymore it's a good fire alarm system not a goofy system it's a vintage system
Yeah it where it’s from
But good system
At 3:21 that bell doesn't sound well tho thats a shame its a good school but that bell sounds bad but the others sound ok
Hey dude, I've enjoyed your videos and how well you document these vintage fire alarm systems. I've noticed you haven't uploaded in a while, are you doing alright?
Hello, and thank you for asking. I am fine but have been terribly busy filming and documenting other schools and fire alarm systems. New videos are coming. Hopefully I will have some to post before the end of this year, so stay tuned.
Has this school been demolished as of this writting?
NO
These old systems are very cool and last forever, but it is so extremely irresponsible for one to still be in use in the 21st century. Not ADA compliant, no fire department dialing, and no automatic detection.
The older systems can very easily be upgraded to be ADA compliant and most of these older systems are and can be tied into security companies and fire departments, I just don't show that in my videos. These older systems are 100 times more dependable then the absolute cheap digital crap that is manufactured today.
St. Joseph High School had an alarm like this in use to 1991 when I graduated.
My high school had this kind of fire alarm. Still in use in 1991!
hope that I will have the opportunity to do a day tour and connect myself with a bond of my elementary schooling Firestone Liberia school system, USA
Thank you for watching and visiting my You Tube channel. Best Wishes!
Question how did you found these the abandoned schools???
I call the school districts to find out what schools are closed and/or decommissioned. I also inquire which schools are scheduled for demolition.
Interesting
I hated it when they repainted my school bells. I loved seeing the bell rust over time.
Wow ❤❤❤
Is that a school bell to the left?
Yes, that is a class change bell made by Standard Electric Time Company.
Wow, all the mechanical action just to get the fire alarm going.
What's that other bell next to the alarm?
That is an Edwards class change bell.
@@OldSchoolFireAlarms Do you have a video of that bell ringing?
@@sandiegotrafficlightstrain354 Which bell are you talking about?
@@sandiegotrafficlightstrain354 No I do not.
@OldSchoolFireAlarms How loud was that bell when it rung? Looks like one of those loud Edwards 6 inch vibrating bells that are usually outside.
Is that a school bell on the left of the alarm?
Yes, that is a class change bell made by Standard Electric Time Company.
Is that a mercury switch for the code wheel? Looks like it! Interesting way to do that
Yes, that is a mercury tube tilt switch.
I love vintage schools. Makes me so sad to see all these old schools be demolished.
I'm currently planning on restoring my 10" IBM Bell, the only problem is, I don't know how to remove the striker from it. The reason I don't know how to do it is because my 10" IBM Bell is a Vibrating Bell, I only know how to remove the striker from Single Stroke Bells. Here's the unboxing video of my 10" IBM Vibrating Bell & also, I gave you a shout out in the video because you're one of my favorite RUclipsrs ruclips.net/video/cYHbK4wzadM/видео.htmlsi=dZho4a_I9O1A_CJJ
This school reminds me of the school building that Matilda went to in the movie with out the newer part
This is what I remember from the early 70’s
The fact how this video was posted on my birthday
Is the alarm system still intact? I really hope so. This alarm system is a piece of history!
Yes, this fire alarm system and school are still in operation to this day. Thanks for watching!
@@OldSchoolFireAlarms That’s nice to know. This video was in my recommendations. I normally don’t like alarms, but old ones are an exception of course.
The 4002 does code 3?
The Simplex FACP 4002 was designed to do several different codes. Code 3 was just one of them.
Theres this school in Lawrenceburg, IN with Single-Stroke Bells and a Faraday I think, you'll find it interesting
Seeing those old school systems in person must've been surreal with how hard they were to find at that point. Though at this point, I doubt any in use out there will be found anymore in operating facilities.
Actually, there are still many of these old fire alarm systems still in use throughout the United States thanks to the "Grandfathers clause".
@@OldSchoolFireAlarms Ah ok, that's pretty cool there's still facilities using them. I've never seen any in person unfortunately.
@@sethhorst6158 You would have to visit many old schools to find one.
The 2001 series of panels were really complicated. But deapite that, they are a robust line of systems. Not much to go wrong with them compared to modern panels
There are photos on Flickr showing the school right after it closed, they kept the frame of the doors in the gym but still it doesn't look that nice
UPDATE ON THIS SCHOOL: Since this video, the conditions of this school got worse, even though they used the gym for about a few games after it was abandoned, now the schools control panel got ripped out, now in a box and the system is all ripped out, where he recorded is now 10 times worse than it used to be, this school is now beyond repair.
Doesn't OSFS take the panel pit for salvation?
Hey, got a question for ya. I can't seem to find much information on it but, the Autocall 121-S/Faraday Type 2 is a rebranded Federal Signal horn right?
That is correct. IBM got them from Federal also and rebranded them as their own.
@@OldSchoolFireAlarms Still lightning quick with the responses after all these years i see (James Wheeler alt account btw if ya recognize that name). Good to be back here since this channel is kinda nostalgic for me since i used to watch it all the time back as a young teen. One more question boss, have you come across a non rebranded Autocall 121-S before and do you know what it was called?
@@CliffNark Great question! The answer is no. The only ones I have in my collection and that I have seen are Autocall, IBM and Faraday. But I'm sure there are other companies that used this type model horn. Edwards and Simplex used Benjamin horns. Wheeler had their own style klaxon horns. I will be posting some new videos soon. Take care.
@@OldSchoolFireAlarms Another quick question. Where did you find out that FS was the OEM for those horns? As always, appreciate the responses plus the work you've done and continue to do bud 👍
@@CliffNark I was fortunate to meet with a former employee who worked for the original Autocall Co. out of Shelby, Ohio. He worked the production line and later became a sales represenative. He was the one who told me that Autocall bought the horns from Federal then rebranded them as their own. The former employee was 79 years old when I met him and that was back in 2008.
God i need a trip bell system in my room!!!
I have a simplex 40-30 dual projector and trust me they are LOUD my dream is to hear one in an echoing building
I know this is an old video but do you recall or know the Horns they used? Sound like 4050s almost...
Yes, the horns are Autocall vibratone Model 350 horns.
@OldSchoolFireAlarms thank I appreciate it, makes sense. You are right about the projectors. Federal signal made them and other companies rebranded them. They even still makes the 350s today as industrial audible signals
@@umbrefawx They were one of the very best horns made, not sure about the newer ones made today.
Hi
which school was this?
This school was the original East High School. The school was later named Goodyear Jr. High School. They changed the name again one last time to Goodyear Middle School. The school has been closed for some time now and was sold to the hotel across the street. So it is now in the hands of a private company. Its just a matter of time before the school is either demolished or repurposed and renovated. In either case, it will cost a large sum of money to do one or the other.
This music goes well with the video, nice work😊
To this day I’m still mad they tore the building down I’m 25 now and this used to be my elementary school I had a lot of fond memories as a kid in that building I’ll never forget
I know exactly what you mean. My sentiments are the very same. That building was still in really good shape. It NEVER should have been demolished. It should have been renovated, new windows, new HVAC, some tuck-pointing masonary work, etc. They could have made that school look like new again.
Sounds like some horns of the disney monorails
Thought our 1960’s fire alarm was obnoxious, this one takes the prize. Our 1962 elementary just went Gaaaah!
I love these Autocall fire alarm systems. I wish my middle school I attended had one of these. The middle school I went to was built in the 60’s and it had edwards class change bells like the ones in it so I’m thinking it had an old Edwards fire alarm system with either fire horns for fire bells with a relay panel similar to these Autocall ones but except no code wheel. At my Junior high school I did notice an Edwards Adaptabell fire bell in the Gym. It’s sad to see that this specific school is condemned. Hopefully you get to keep whatever you can for that fire alarm museum.
Thank you for watching and for your comment.
what is the current status of this school?
This will be the last year this school will be in operation. Sadly, at the end of this school year, Firestone Park Elementary will permanently be closing its doors.
dammit, I knew this would happen eventually but it has been a good run for this old school.
Imagine Code 3 On Old Alarms
There is Code 3 on old fire alarms. Watch my video, Old Cleveland School Fire Alarm. That system is over 100 years old and signals Code - 3.
Awesome to see that this system is still here! I wish I had a system like this in my house so I could blast these horns on new years. Although I do have a vintage smoke alarm that sounds similar to this but except it does continuous instead of the Marching caidence 4-4-4-4
